The film launched Bana into mainstream success as a movie star after a career primarily limited to the Australian comedy scene. The film was a success in Australia and received some global recognition as well.
After serving his term, Read proves unfit for the outside world and soon lands back in prison, where he can take only fleeting comfort in the tabloid fame that his antics and charm have brought him. Read is shown to be a violent and unbalanced man with a forceful and often gregarious personality. The film begins with the incidents leading up to his famous self-mutilation, in which he had his ears chopped off in order to escape retaliation from a rival. The film portrays a portion of Read's storied life, beginning and ending in prison. Because of this, I can only really appreciate Chopper halfway.A 2000 Australian film directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Eric Bana as the infamous Real Life Melbourne criminal Mark 'Chopper' Read. Gives the film a small quirky touch, but not an impressive one. Boring peripheral characters, boring decor and an empty story, but fun antics from Bana. Without Bana, this film would have completely collapsed. Nice movie, but not one that will leave an impression. Crazy types are always fun, but they don't last for such a length of time. Furthermore, it is mainly following whatever Bana is up to and that does not know for a playing time of 94 minutes. Somewhat boring establishments and a director who only really shows his teeth in terms of style in the last 15 minutes.
It's still entertaining, but I didn't find the fairly bare-bones layout of the film particularly appealing. The film therefore has no real relative content. In almost every scene we follow him and not really the environment around him. The story just ripples along, seems to have been written around Bana's character on the spot. If it were up to director Dominik, the film would fall completely into the boring void, but Chopper puts a stop to that.īeneath the endearing type of Bana rests a relatively normal prison/crime film with rather empty content. In this case, it's Bana himself, who actually takes the film on his shoulders and discharges the viewer through it. Geeft de film wel een klein eigenzinnig tikje, maar geen indrukwekkend tikje. Saaie randpersonages, saaie inrichting en een leeg verhaal, maar wel leuke fratsen vanuit Bana. Zonder Bana was deze film integraal ingestort. Gekke types zijn altijd leuk, maar houden niet stand voor zo'n speelduur.Īardige film wel, maar niet eentje die een indruk gaat achterlaten. Verder is het vooral volgen whatever Bana is up to en dat weet niet voor een speelduur van 94 minuten. Ietwat saaie inrichtingen en een regisseur die pas helemaal in de laatste 15 minuten zijn tanden laat zien qua stijl. Vermakelijk is het nog wel maar ik vond de redelijk kale inrichting van de film niet bepaald aantrekkelijk. Een echt betrekkelijke inhoud heeft de film daarom ook niet. In vrijwel elke scene volgen we namelijk hem en niet echt de omgeving om hem heen. Verhaaltje kabbelt eigenlijk maar wat voort, lijkt ook ter plekke om het personage van Bana heen geschreven te zijn. Onder het innemende type van Bana rust een relatief normale gevangenis/misdaadfilm met een nogal lege inhoud. Als het namelijk aan regisseur Dominik lag valt de film compleet in de saaie leegte, maar daar steekt Chopper een stokje voor. In dit geval is dat Bana zelf, die de film eigenlijk op zijn schouders neemt en de kijker erdoorheen loost. Had er ook niet zo veel van verwacht, want films als Chopper maken direct duidelijk waar ze van profiteren.
